The vignettes of David Moses, Helen
L'Amoreaux, Peter Jones, Jerry
Fox, and Verne Peters are true, except for their
names. They all suffered from some
type of cardiovascular disease, they all benefited from a cardiovascular
wellness and rehabilitation
program. You can read their complete stories in Heart
Attack! Advice for Patients by Patients, published by
Yale University Press.
This book was put together by participants right here at the
Cardiac Therapy Foundation of the Midpeninsula.
They felt that a book about
heart attacks, written by people who had them, would not only be unique, but
might inspire and educate millions throughout the world. It could be
helpful even to those who have not had a heart attack but were eager to prevent
one.
The book contains more than their stories. Eight
well-qualified professionals wrote chapters on heart attack, treatment,
nutrition, and guidelines for choosing an effective program, as well as a
chapter on cardiac rehabilitation in action. References are provided in
the book, which do not require specific medical training to understand. A
glossary provides help with any difficult medical terms. All of the
professionals who wrote chapters checked the contributions of the participants
for scientific accuracy and made changes as appropriate.
The book offers the perspective of those who have had
angina or a heart attack and have lived to tell the story. Each
participant you will encounter has a unique tale. Yet you will also find a
considerable commonality, especially in the ways they have come to value their
own cardiovascular rehabilitation program.
One of the striking features of the participants' stories
is how many have survived and are doing well long after they started
experiencing angina or had a heart attack; two, in fact, have survived thirty
years or longer. New participants find that meeting these people and
hearing their stories is uplifting and gives them hope. We trust that will
be your experience.
